Last week, the Kentucky Energy & Environment Cabinet’s Oil and Gas Division informed lawmakers that it had successfully plugged 627 orphan oil and gas wells in 27 counties throughout the state, using a $25M federal grant through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Unplugged wells have the potential to leak chemicals into groundwater or methane into buildings, and thousands likely remain across the state, according to the Cabinet. Kentucky continues to search for and plug additional undocumented abandoned wells.
More information on the orphan well program can be found on Kentucky’s Oil & Gas webpage.
